How taking a year off to travel taught me to say ‘yes’

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a young Aussie in possession of a passport and some dollars, must be in want of far off lands. Taking a gap year to travel the world is a rite of passage for many with the travel bug being widespread among our people.
When you want to take a pause in life, between the pressure of study and settling down into the real world, or you just want to shake things up a bit between jobs, head off on an adventure that will expand your horizons and create lasting memories.
Volunteering abroad comes with a bit of a social stigma. The 'gap yah' comedy sketch, where posh boy Orlando boasts about his drunken adventures, has led many to dismiss overseas volunteer projects as a middle-class cliche. From my experience, the stereotype couldn't be further from the truth.
