Speed demons, listen up. You need to get to the Mount Hutt pronto. Known as the ‘Capital of Speed’, Mt Hutt has an epic vertical drop and seriously steep pitch – just perfect for racing. But you don’t have to be a speed freak to appreciate this chilled-out and inexpensive ski holiday destination. Mt Hutt ski resort is great for beginners and intermediates too.
Mt Hutt is a seriously beautiful place to take a ski trip. The views from the mountain are simply incredible. On a clear day you can look out across the Canterbury Plains and see the Pacific Ocean. Plus if you’re looking for a little après-ski action, you’ll find plenty of sweet bars, pubs, restaurants and cafes in Methven.
With 3 cosy restaurants to choose from and onsite services, Mt Hutt snow is in prime form between June and October each year. Mt Hutt is on the South Island, just a 90-minute drive from Christchurch, so you can fly in to Christchurch, then hire a car or take a bus to Methven. From Methven to Mt Hutt, you can take a shuttle bus or drive if you’re comfortable with mountain driving and putting chains on your tyres.
There are 2 main terrain parks and one pipe on Mt Hutt, making it a snowy playground for those who like a varied terrain. There are 5 different lifts that operate here and you can choose between Tararua Iced Coffee Terrain Park, Mini Terrain Park or Skyhigh Terrain Park. With its 365 hectares of treeless terrain, advanced riders will dig the Low Drive and Hydro Slide – they’re steep and awesome! While you can’t stay on mountain, the quaint little town of Methven is just a 30- to 40-minute drive from the resort. Despite being a little country town, Methven has plenty of options in the way of accommodation. Take your pick from hotels, cosy B&Bs, family owned-and-operated lodges, backpackers and motels. You’ll find they’re all competitively priced too.
